Who is your reader/philosopher at philosopher's tarot?
John deVille. Born and raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Teaching US History and philosophy for 25 years to high school students as well as doing philosophy and history seminars for adults. BA in philosophy from UNC Chapel Hill; BS Social Science Ed from Western Carolina University.
My relationship with the tarot goes back to the late 80s but life intervened and the cards were tucked away.
Some time ago, I was prepping for a lecture on Neoplatonism for an adult philosophy seminar, I made a sudden turn and down the tarot rabbit hole I went. Since then, most of my free time has mostly been focused on tarot, mythology, philosophical investigation, and doing readings.
I see tarot as an umbrella for all of my interests in the humanities... primarily history and philosophy. And within those disciplines lie the interests of epistemology (how do we know what we know), historiography (how do we frame historical narratives), Neoplatonism, alchemy, hermeticism, mythology, and Jungian psychology.
The tag line for Philosopher's Tarot is "The Art of Historical Location." That refers to my approach to reading. I take your question and then consult the cards with my knowledge of history, philosophy, hermetic/alchemical correspondences combined with my intuition and then I tell you a story based on all of those components, getting feedback from you as we go through the spread. The goal of the reading is to generate ideas and to unlock what was subconscious and bring that to the forefront of your consciousness so that you may apply those ideas and insights into your historical situation and your future, so that you may find paths, ladders, tools, and conceptual frameworks which collectively serve to give you a better grasp on your fate.
In addition to the Quest for the Grail spread explained below, I offer more traditional readings of ten cards, and deep readings of ten cards combined with a personality profile based on the research of William Mouton Marston.
I am available for live Zoom readings or written readings, the price is the same for both.
If you're in Macon or Jackson County, NC, we can typically arrange to meet in person on fairly short notice. I make regular visits to the Asheville area and typically am in the Triangle every other month.

Quest for the Grail Spread
A grail….THE grail? Is it a mere “serving dish”, or a metaphor for spiritual growth to be served “in stages?” Is it some sort of miraculous healing stone? Is it Jesus’s cup from the Last Supper? Or a fabled chalice sought by the knights in service to King Arthur in their various quests? Does asking the right question in the presence of the grail heal the land?
The commonality here is that the grail has spiritual significance to the seeker. And many of us have our own “grail”, an elusive goal that acts as a magnet for our journey, its healing power attainable, if we ask the right question and act with honest, mindful intention and courage in the quest..
The Quest for the Grail Spread.
1. You send me an email letting me know of your desire for a reading. I will lay out nine cards and send you a photograph of the spread and a PayPal invoice for $30.
2. Respond with:
(a) Which card are you most drawn to as it relates to a spiritual, material, intellectual, and/or emotional goal?
(b) What is it about that card that draws you to it?
(c) If you could ask that card a question, what would it be?
(d) With the exception of position/card #5, where would you like to start your quest (where do you want to “enter the forest?”)
I will then create your path from the point of entry to the forest and outline your journey and provide you a written reading of the things of which you should be mindful on your Quest for your Grail. Once we get to the Grail, I will ask your question on your behalf and record your response and send it back to you.
